The smells waft out of every stall in the the beautiful Sibu Central Market in Malaysia. Everything smells so enticing it can be hard to know what to try. I have complied a list of the top dishes to try in Malaysia.
Nasi Kandar - This is a staple dish in Malaysia and actually means ‘mixed rice.’ Nasi Kandar is based on Tamil dishes thanks to the high number of South Indian immigrants. This dish commonly includes chicken, fish, or seafood and vegetables like okra or cabbage.
Nasi Lemak - ‘fat rice’, is coconut rice, fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber slices, prorwan sambal, and ayam rendang.
Nasi kerabu - known for its blue rice, which is served with fried chicken, egg, and fried keropok.
Assam laksa - sour tamarind broth peppered with mackerel, rice noodles, and vegetable garnishing.
Curry laksa - this is a creamy soup thickened with coconut milk. Yum!
Briyani - be wary of the spice level when enjoying this mixed rice dish from India.
Apom balik - a sticky rice-flour pancake filled with creamed corn. Resembles a taco!
Roti canai - staple item in the street food scene of Malaysia. It’s accompanied by three dipping sauces of varying levels of spiciness.
Roti tisu - comes in a teepee shape, can be ordered sans sugar for a savoury treat.
Pisang goreng - it is a deep fried banana. You must try it.
Banana leaf rice - served on a broad banana leaf its white rice topped with crispy pappadom surrounded by veggies.
Bak kut teh - this dish is a fatty pork rib stew with a salty broth.
Fish head curry - Indian curry made with fish head, try the fish eye if you’re feeling adventurous try the eye.
Soupy lou shu fan - ‘mouse tail noodles’, this name describes the shape of the rice noodles.
Restaurants To Try
Heli Lounge Bar - is a bar set up on a helipad–a fully operational helipad during the day, and a bar at night. It has stunning 360 views of KL city, which is best seen at sunset. The bar officially opens at 6:00pm each day, but closes if it rains. Best to reserve a table, as it gets busy. Pacific Standard Bar - Pacific Standard Bar pays homage to the best of California in the 1950s and 1960s; a time when the glamour and romance of vintage Hollywood was on the rise, and rules were made to be broken. The cocktails are delicious, and the views are stunning–two wonderful combinations! A must-try is their Fat White Russian, which is topped with a boozy house-made donut liquor.
Pacific Standard Bar, Level 41, Alila Bangsar Hotel
Marini’s on 57 - in the Menara 3 building, which is next door to the Petronas Twin Towers. It is located on level 57 and offers magnificent views of KL city. You can get up close and personal with the twin towers that it almost feels like you can touch it. Best to go in the late afternoon for happy hour drinks and then keep the party going into the night. No shorts or flip-flops allowed at the bar. To visit: Marini’s on 57, Level 57, Menara 3 Building, KLCC.
The Sky Bar - at the Trader’s Hotel. It has the best view of the Twin Towers, because the bar is located literally opposite the Twin Towers (across the park) and it is unobstructed.
