Visiting Bonaire

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

Never heard of Bonaire before now? You’re not alone. Measuring just 294 square kilometres, this tiny island could very well be the Caribbean’s best-kept secret. Located 80 kilometres north of Venezuela (but far below the hurricane belt), Bonaire is part of the “Dutch ABC islands,” along with Aruba and Curaçao. The Netherlands municipality is home to about 19,000 residents—many of whom speak Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and English.

I have been dying to visit Bonaire for years now, but somehow I keep missing it on my travels. I have done some research on what I would love to do when I finally make it there. Enjoy my future plans that someday I will put to good use.

Things to See & Do:

  1. Visit Bonaire’s Salt pyramids - center of the Caribbean’s salt industry. There are beautiful pink flats with white salt around them stacked into 50ft pyramids!

  2. Chill at the 1,000 steps beach. It is accessible via a limestone staircase.

  3. Cadushy Distillery - Here you can sample the world's only cactus liquor

  4. Stroll along Kaya Gandi, the main shopping district of Kralendijk. Here's where you can pick up any gifts for your family back home, if that's your jam.

  5. Go snorkeling in Klein Bonaire. This is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Bonaire to see the underwater world up close!

Restaurants and Bars:

  1. Brass Boer - located in the Delfins Beach Resort

  2. Ingredients Restaurant - located in the Buddy Dive Resort; serves mediterranean food

  3. Posada Para Mira - Head here to try the local cuisine -> iguana (some say it’s an aphrodisiac) ; also try goat, plantain, and papaya.

  4. Gio's Gelato - must try gelato, it is a gelato shop after all! Located along the Kaya Gandi

  5. Zazu Bar

  6. Jibe City
